I read this because the audiobook comes so highly recommended, correctly! She's an interesting woman who's made the most of a rough life. But really, big picture, the book presents a damning indictment of the US. Phew.

This was a HARD listen! Viola has been through it!! Trigger warnings for domestic abuse and sexual abuse.

This is why I'm willing to overlook her bad portrayal of Michelle Obama. She has been through a lot. Let her have one bad role!

Wow. That's all I can say truly. I am usually not a memoir person, I don't gravitate to them easily or voluntarily a lot of the time. This book was chose for my book club's read for the month of May and it is one of the best books I have ever read in my life without a doubt. It was so real, authentic and honest. At times the book was so sad and traumatizing to the point where it brought me to tears but I was so INVESTED I had to finish. This book made laugh almost as much as it made me cry and told the story of the truth and resilience of black women in entertainment as a whole. As I was reading  about these pieces of her life, I felt like she was sitting right next to me telling me her whole life's story over coffee. Even though her story has many hard and broken parts it never once felt pathetic or weak. This book didn't feel like a cry for help, but more like a tale of hope. We all need more hope in our lives. This memoir made me feel so connected to the plight of how hard black women have to work as well as how hard it is to work against something as constricting as overwhelming poverty. 5 Stars, I would recommend this over and over again.

Holy cow. This needs to be read by any woman, anywhere.
This beautiful soul passionately pursued her dreams - no matter what.
Viola, I have a massive crush on you - your strength, resilience, and beauty are immense.

How to Get Away with Murder was one of my favorite shows. Reading about Violas life and being able to see in her life was eye opening. Especially with trying to get into the acting business and the struggles of not even having insurance. I loved this book and was sobbing by the end. I’m glad she was able to write this and has found herself.

I’m convinced Viola Davis is a national treasure and we don’t deserve her. Her talent is undeniable after being one of the few to win an Emmy, Grammy, an Oscar and a Tony. After reading her book (narrated by Viola) I am also convinced she is a hero to those that need help in accepting who they truly are. She reminds us that it is ok to love yourself when you were little, love yourself as you were growing, love yourself now and to have compassion for current and former versions of yourself. Viola’s childhood was pretty, it was hard. Listening to her talk about her life was eye opening, mesmerizing and difficult at times but I’m so happy I did!
