I enjoy reading the biographies and memoirs of people that I respect and admire because I hope to be inspired by their story and perhaps see myself experiencing their journey. That is the joy of reading – to live a thousand lives within a single lifetime. It is deeply satisfying to read from a person’s own words how they started from seemingly nothing and transformed into the iconic figure we know and love today. It makes them appear human instead of a supernatural being. Some biographies feel like empty calorie snacks or maybe even a tasty appetizer that doesn’t quite satisfy my hunger. After reading “Finding Me,” I feel that Viola Davis served me a full-course meal and I am completely full.

I am in awe of Viola’s courage to write this book in all of its beautiful and painful details. I feel that I have a deeper appreciation of the deep well of emotions she draws from in her performances and will be watching her films and TV performances with a new appreciation. I am not ashamed to admit that this book took me on an emotional rollercoaster, from tears to cheering for Viola. I don’t think I could admit many of the things she wrote in my own personal journal, much less bare them to the world for scrutiny.

It is difficult to truly appreciate the beauty of a warm and sunny day with experiencing a few dark and cold storms. The inspiration I obtained from Viola’s story, is that it is possible to manifest light even in the darkest storms. It requires reconciling the past and accepting that all experiences chisel us into the person we are and hope to become. Don’t let anyone mess with your joy. Thank you, Viola, for having the courage to share your story with the world.

Listened to the audiobook, extremely compelling and moving. Really made me want to hold my childhood self & tell her it’s ok.

Viola Davis is an exceptional writer. Her memoir is as beautiful as it is painful as it is inspirational. Also it totally got me in the mood to go watch everything she’s in because she’s ALSO an amazing actor.
