Davis is one strong BA woman. To be honest, this was really hard to listen to at times. Her childhood was horrific. Family stricken with poverty and abuse. But she fought so hard and overcame so much.

What a life. And what an inspiration. I love that she held nothing back. The truth is hard to hear and most people want to pretend like the experiences of Black individuals aren’t as challenging and harmful as they are or that those in dire circumstances are always there because of their own choices. When the fact is systemic discrimination plays a starring role in the poverty so many people face.

This memoir is a startling example of just how racist America is and how resilient Black Americans are in spite of it. It was also another reminder for me (a Black Canadian woman who grew up poor, not po’) how privileged I am. As Viola Davis shows in this book real poor (po’) is growing up and knowing it, not being able to escape that reality.

This is an amazing, beautiful woman both inside and out.
