Absolutely phenomenal. This book made me feel seen. It forced me to confront myself and I couldn't run away, for once, I didn't want too. This story was that of struggle, pain, fear, hunger, triumph, and heartbreak. I loved getting to know Viola and her audiobook narration was like being wrapped in a warm blanket. I felt so much, learned so much, and I cried a lot. This book changed the way I see myself and I will forever be grateful.

If I had to describe Viola Davis in a word it would be resilient. Horrific upbringing of poverty, trauma, and abuse. Surprisingly later in life she referred to Rhode Island as home, nothing in her memoir screams home. Abusive father, rampant domestic violence, racism experienced from school teachers, and even bullfrog neighbors accused of kidnapping children for welfare. What the actual F…? Never mind the squalor, filth, and rats. So much of her memoir is devoted to her childhood, given it was far from a childhood o can understand why. Overall, the books structure is chaotic and repetitive. Although it is her memoir, I would have liked to hear more about character development of her various roles.
Despite her upbringing she found a path out, both financially and functional growth. Her husband came into her life at the pivotal time, he grounded her and helped her thrive. He can her the permission to be her. Thankfully for her sake she found him.
Viola Davis is far more forgiving than I could ever be. I do not think I could be as good of a person. She is caring and loves her family, which shows with how she takes care of her nieces and nephews.
Good on her.
Viola Davis as a person 5*
Narrative structure 2*
Overall rounded down to 3* for bias towards childhood

Most of the focus was on her family life. I love her but something about it didn’t inspire me in this moment for acting as I hoped it would
