A clever book, but not enough to make up for it's boring characters. Though the twist of explaining certain deficits in the story at the final twist was interesting.

great twist

A 2.5 from me. It was interesting in parts and while I understand delving into the atmosphere of the 70s to try and bring the reader more "into" the book, it was disappointing, perhaps because I felt there was a lot of unnecessary waffling. Also I was under the assumption that it was a spy story. It's not. It's a love story. The last chapter is brilliant though - and saves it from a one-star.

Half way through I wanted to quit. But I also hate quitting on books. But one would think that a book about espionage would be a bit more intriguing. I was glad I didn't quit because the last quarter of the book clicked, finally. But it was way to long in getting there.

So good favorite mcewan so far…. Twists and turns and deceit and love and vibes such as those.

A well written modern story. While the characters were somewhat cold and unlikeable, the writing made up for this and I enjoyed the storyline. I good novel about relationships and manipulation.

I read this recently, and then apparently forgot. Not a good sign. Anyway, a high concept novel that only partially pulls it off. Not my favorite McEwan by far.

Ugh, what a waste of time this book was. What was interesting at the beginning became boring in the middle and horribly inauthentic and gimmicky at the end. The 'trick' was obviously intended to be an 'oh my god, Ian you GENIUS' moment for the reader, as if he'd written Inception or conceived of the 6th sense ending (these are other, pre existing gripes). But he totally missed the mark. It almost felt like he was attempting to justify his middling to poor writing on his middling to poorly written character, Tom.

In conclusion: this novel was an arid, boring read.
