DID NOT FINISH

This book was on the best sellers list and has good reviews. I made it 60% of the way through the book before I gave up. I haven't read a book by this author before, but his style of writing is not for those with short attention spans. The author consumes the reader with with an abundance of detail where it is not needed--and skips over highly important parts using just a sentence. The author is completely at fault with this failure of a book. The description and the story are both solid; The author's inability to tell a story effectively washes away any desire to finish the book.

This is my final appointment with Ian McEwan, as the last novel of his I truly enjoyed was Enduring Love -- about four McEwans ago. If you want to read McEwan, read that one. Or Atonement.

This is not a 3 star book.  This is either barely a 2 star, or a 4.25./4.5.  A 3 doesn't feel remotely accurate, but it's what I have to give it.

This was recommended to me by being described as "torture to read, but you realize in the last 20 pages that the author is a genius."  On a technical level, this book is great, reluctantly I have to agree even that it's genius.  On an enjoyment level, this book sucked, there was no draw, I did not care about really any of the characters, and it didn't feel like there was much of a plot.  The issue is that those gripes I have are examples of the technical prowess.

The twist at the end should have been obvious but I haven't actually read a book that does that outside of YA, so I wasn't even considering that as an option since I have associations with it being implemented in more juvenile works (and often poorly done as well).

I don't know, this is a weird one for me.  Didn't like it, but I do have an appreciation for it.

What a marvellous spy-story!
Following Serena's career at the MI5 and how she ended up there, the romantic entanglement of her and her job becomes more prevalent.
First Tony, then Max, and finally during her mission 'Sweet Tooth' Tom
. Interweaved in her narrative are Tom's stories, which she studies as part of her job as well as his partner, and which finally lead to the climax of the book -
her story being found out (thanks to Max feeding the press out of jealousy that Serena won't take him back, despite him breaking off his engagementto another women) and written down by Tom as a secret project, ready for publication.

I was not sure if I liked this book all the way to the last chapter, when McEwan spins the entire spy story on its head. Once I knew where he was headed, I wanted to (and did) go back and retread to see how we got there. Although I still find several sections of the book dull and kind of annoying, I feel that it is all necessary. I am in awe of McEwan's craft and structure and think he did a brilliant job with this book. Stick with it - it is worth it!

I enjoyed this a lot. Not as much about spying as I thought it might be, but a great story lovely prose.
