Really expected not to like this book much but loved it! Found the main character to be someone worth rooting for rather than being insufferable like they normally are. Loved the dragons personality. Like the main love interest.

I enjoyed the world-building, the magic system, and the twists. I hated the overly spicy scenes that I had to flip past (turning the pages quickly without reading much) because they were not only too explicit, but vulgar in the both the language used and the crass manner in which they were described. YMMV, but you've been warned. I would give it a 5+ out of 5 on the spice scale.

One of the things I found really interesting was that the characters are mostly young adults (many teens) and the book felt like it should be YA in the character's actions/feelings/speech. Without the sex scenes, this really should have been a YA book. This is not a critique, I'm a Youth Librarian and I read and enjoy a LOT of YA books.

Without the too-detailed and too-vulgar spice scenes, I would have given this book 5 stars. As it is, I give it 4 solid stars

A classic popular fantasy book. I'm curious to see where this goes but have some issues with the world-building.

I don’t get the hype. The book was mostly plot driven. It tried to get me attached to the characters, but there were barely any scenes of them talking to each other beyond bantering about sex and/or making fun of each other. I didn’t know why most of her fellow riders were even there. Occasionally, Violet would mention
random riders’ names and how she knew them from breakfast or something, yet we never saw them.
The pacing is very odd, with a slow beginning full of infodumping that never turns out to matter (the lumber trade is never relevant) and then a breakneck middle and end.

The romance was also devoid of tension. There was an actual line about how they had a sexual tension filled enemies to lovers relationship and I laughed aloud. The murder of their family members is barely ever relevant and Violet feels no hate because she is a wimp. Xaden never actually tries to kill her. I also think their relationship was mostly lust based.
Violet also harasses Xaden into confessing and that’s the most unromantic thing ever.

I also don’t like how Violet being short was mentioned so often, almost as much as her actual disability. It was more of a vehicle to compare her to 6’4 Xaden. They also had no trouble during the smut scene which was odd.

I liked the battle scenes, they flowed pretty well. Tairn was also fun.
