Booktok was very weird in promoting mostly the romance in this book. The action was so fun to read! I love rooting for the underdog! RIP Liam 💔 That ending though!!!! 😱 (I would’ve rated higher if it weren’t for the spice scenes. I’m ok with spice scenes, but these were kinda cringe. Sorry….)

This book follows Violet who is made to join the dragon riders quadrant by her mother, a general of the Basgiath War College, despite having trained her whole life for the scribe quadrant.

We follow Violet during her first year of dragon rider training and the relationships she develops along the way. Violet is a lovable character you can’t help but root for and the relationship she forms with Xeden is captivating a true enemies to lovers plot line.

The final few chapters were emotional, tense and heartbreaking but the ending was so unexpected you can’t possibly not reach for the next book in the series and because of that Iron Flame will be my next read.

One of the best fantasy books I’ve read in AGES! Slow burn doesn’t even begin to cover it. The lore of the lands is so complex and there’s nothing I love more than a little bit of corruption in a fantasy.

This is objectively not a very good book. But I also won't say I actively disliked it. I feel like other creators have already pointed out the flaws in the writing and character development, so I won't really go into detail about any of those things. I was putting off reading the book because I don't really like spice, but I was also curious about the story. Thankfully, I think the people I heard talk about this book might have overexaggerated the spice level, and I managed to read it just fine. There are actually only two spicy scenes in the book, both of which I just skimmed over because I couldn't handle the cringe. But otherwise it was ok, I just had to get over the fact that Violet is apparently horny all of the time (despite the fact that she is in very real danger of dying all of the time). Whatever, I guess.
The story was really decent, especially towards the end of the book when we discover all the secrets that the government has been keeping from all them, and real reasons for the rebellion.

I just feel like this was an aggressively "just ok" book, and unfortunately, after that cliffhanger of an ending, I will have to reluctantly keep reading the rest of the series.

So overrated. I love the story, but the romantic situation between the two of them is a pain and ruins the plot.

The writing is amazing. It is a medium to fast paced story but within that time you get to understand the characters and love them all so much.

Was this the perfect book? Nope. But I loved it! It’s been a long time since I’ve devoured a book like I did this one, while simultaneously being consumed by the book. It’s a wonderful feeling.
