⚔️ Violet Sorrengail has spent her whole life training to become a scribe at Basgiath War College - only to be forced into the Dragon Riders Quadrant by her mother, The General. In a world where death can arrive at any moment, Violet must prove herself to be worthy of not only bonding and riding a dragon, but surviving. The stakes in the Riders Quadrant are high - fly or die. Thrust into the wing led by her sworn enemy, Xaden Riorson, she must face her struggle between her hatred and undeniable attraction for him. Her once-in-a-century signet and bonds make her an even larger target. With deadly challenges and quests around every corner, Violet uncovers dark secrets and hidden history amongst the deepest walls of Basgiath. Has everything she’s been taught a lie? Who can she truly trust? Using her training as a scribe, Violet pieces together the turmoil surrounding the kingdom of Navarre. With their collective skills and uncovered knowledge, Fourth Wing and their dragons fight to uncover the truth and protect those they love and those in need of their help.

This book had me EMOTIONAL. Wow. I had heard a lot of both positive and negative reviews on this but I can’t believe I waited this long to experience it for myself. I LOVED it. As someone who’s always been frail and dealt with chronic illness her whole life, Violet really resonated with me. I loved the chronic illness rep and how it truly ties in with building mental strength as well. Her character growth was motivating for me. The challenges were high stakes and the characters were captivating. Xaden & Violet’s slow burn and struggle for trust between hating each other and the bond growing between them was intoxicating. The banter & tension between them was *chef’s kiss*. Xaden’s encouragement and faith in Violet had my heart melting for them. The dragons…PERFECT. The dragon banter?! NO NOTES. The found family and secondary characters had me riding an absolute emotional rollercoaster. 😩 I finished this and immediately started Iron Flame because I could not wait for more. Then I read Iron Flame in two days. This is a book I will read again & again & again until my time to meet Malek arrives.

A review of the audiobook.

It’s good. But not a great experience for rereading. I don’t think I’d relisten to this in future so it gets <4.0 rating

I didn’t like the Teddy Hamilton narration of xaden’s chapter. I don’t understand his popularity. And Rebecca Soler didn’t get to me with the dramatic moments  (Liam’s scene made me cry when I read this book last year). The sex scenes werent memorable narrations. And The voices for Tairn and others weren’t good. It felt like an American contemporary college romance narration. Rather than a dramatic Romantasy.

The terrible pronunciation of Scottish Gaelic words and names  remains unchanged in this recording. Hopefully RY will be motivated to improve this in future.
