This was so haunting, captivating, and atmospheric. The visual depiction of the main characters' decent into insanity through the darkening of the pages of the book was such an ingenious idea.

this was honestly really, wow. i was not expecting to be this affected by this book but alas. it kind of reminds me of the movie the fly since i just watched that. august is in horrible agony as he has to watch someone he loves succumb to the horrors of mental illness. it was portrayed really creatively in this book - jack had fantastical hallucinations as a symptom of his illness, so a sort of fantasy world was playing out in his head, and august just had to be along for the ride.
i kind of really love middle class america horror. think: 70s to early 2000s time period. bleak, dismal, northern or midwest setting. people working jobs they hate and getting by only by their vices, which steal their money and their health. rocky home lives in homes where the bills are just barely paid. the plot points of this story only worked out because both of these boys had terrible home lives. a niche set of characteristics, but put together, they just make a really powerful uncanny horror setting to me.
and this story was able to blend all those elements really well. like, of course the horror in a middle class american neighborhood where the parents never pay attention to the kids would be a degenerative mental illness. it’s just too real. anyways i’m rambling but even though this is ya i thought it was incredibly well-written and really impactful. props to k. ancrum, this was great

Buddy read with Dragons and Tea Book Club (I don’t know how to do links on mobile oops) (yes I read ahead, we weren’t supposed to finish this until tomorrow but I couldn’t resist)
I was not expecting to like this so much. The description sounded decent but I didn’t anticipate getting as invested in the characters and story as I did. Ancrum did an amazing job of making you feel like you were part of the story, that you were just as much a part of Jack’s world as August. I feel like the super short short chapters really contributed to that somehow, it really really worked with the story. Every aspect of this book just worked in every way. I didn’t give it 5 stars because 5 stars are usually reserved for books that made me me sob, which this one did not, but for everything else it was absolutely perfect. I loved this book so much. I remember reading a couple reviews that said this book queer baited though, which I’m confused about, but anyways. Read this, you won’t regret it
