4.5 this was a simply written but intricate story that I am still wrapping my head around and will probably haunt me for a while. The choice to explore dark themes through the frame of August as he witnessed Jack's descent definitely served allowed the author to build the story up to the point the reader knew it was going while still making the peak of the story feel shocking and unexpected to arrive when it did. Honestly this is one of the best YA books I've read in a while where the author managed to tell an honest and complex story about teenagers truthfully, without condescending or infantalizing them, or making them into mini adults. The authors note at the end really drove this home for me because the author acknowledged the trauma of the story she was telling and the way the two main characters were failed by those around them. My only main critics however is that I felt like the female characters and particularly the one woman of color were flat and fell into the trap of existing only for the development of the main male characters, particularly as sexual/romantic partners. Overall though, it was a layered and well handled story that I will be thinking about for a while.

I like the short chapters. The easy writing. The formatting. Thats about it tho
Thank you to my friend Dusti for buying this for me to read.
I really enjoyed this book and I do definitely think that this book is best consumed physically rather than by audio or as an ebook. I feel like the physical book does an amazing job of showing what is happening in the story without using words. Such as the small illustrations around the pages and the way the books colour changes as the story progresses.
I would definitely recommend this book to people as it is a really refreshing read rather than something that we have all read before. I am really curious to read the authors other works and to find other books similar to this book.

A book that will stay with me for quite some time, with an important story about teens taking on a really difficult situation that they shouldn't have to handle themselves and therefore chaos more or less ensues. It shows how the adults in the story was really failing the kids despite the many warning signs throughout it all, which happens too often in real life as well.
I feel the need to mention that the Author's note was incredibly meaningful, important and probably the best Author's note I've ever read.
Be sure to check the trigger warnings before you read it tho!
