Really enjoyable! I started Pierce’s works with Circle of Magic, and I can definitely tell that this is an earlier work of hers. Some of the plot lines (e.g. George) were difficult to buy into, but that’s childrens’ fantasy as a genre.

This is the first time I've read Alanna since I was a kid and I'm pleasantly surprised by how well it holds up. It is still a solid fantasy adventure YA.

When Alanna first made an appearance 30+ years ago, she didn't realize she was setting the stage for a veritable onslaught of feisty and fierce female protagonists. Sure, the writing is a little dated, and yes, things seem to fall into place a little easier for Alanna than, say, Katniss, but what a great series for middle grade girls looking for a strong female character they can grow up with.

When I was a young girl who struggled daily to read at the same pace as her peers, a librarian recommended this book and changed my life.

This is the book that made 9-year-old me fall in love with reading. It also made me want to be a knight, much to the dismay of my brother, who now had to share his toy swords. I love these books to this day.

Do the tween/teen girls in your life a favour, and get them this book.
