“Depends on your perspective. God turned his back, left paradise to us. Like handing a five-year-old a straight razor. We slit open the World's belly. Secrets came spilling out. An intestine full of truth and shit strangled us.”

Oh boy, I am sad to say that I initially really enjoyed this. But upon reflecting on what I had just read, well, I think The Simpsons said it best.

Milhouse: "Mr. Moore, will you sign my DVD of Watchmen Babies?"

Doomsday Clock : Watchmen :: The Last Stand : X-Men

There's fun bits in it but, uh, slight change in tone.

It has the iconography. It has the characters. It even has the tone. But this is far from a great sequel. While the idea to merge Watchmen with the mainstream DC universe is ambitious, the execution here leaves much to be desired. While it is much more narratively convoluted, this series lacks the thematic complexity of the original. There are far too many characters and storylines vying for attention, and only a few factor into the main plot in any meaningful way. And it can barely hold a candle to the far superior HBO show.

This was absolutely terrible. Can someone please explain to Geoff Johns that he is not Alan Moore so he can stop trying to one-up him with the man’s characters? Every character in this book has been written so off that I don’t know how it was possibly approved by editorial. Other than the fact that Dan Didio literally hates everything about DC and will approve anything that continues the trend of making DC “edgier” than it used to be. Johns even has a brag at the end of the book about his producing and co-writing Wonder Woman 1984. Yeah that aged well. The art is really quite magnificent, though. It’s just a shame that Gary Frank got paired up with this trite garbage script.

I really, really enjoy this! I am not all the way caught up on DC continuity, but I have read the big stuff like Rebirth, The Button and Metal. I am a big fan of the Watchmen original, and I found the Rorschach maxi-series lacking. This is a more enjoyable sequel. The assault on Mars was a great crossover moment. I enjoy the political intrigue, and I like that Superman is the anchor of hope. Also I'm glad that Manhattan has tweaked the Universe instead of creating it wholesale. There's like a micro Flashpoint going on.
