Athene is a cunt but she’s fucking funny. Despite what the blurb and title would lead you to believe this is an ensemble book with Medusa at the central axis. Instead of being focused on Medusa and her story it focus’ more on the goings on around her through plenty of seemingly unconnected stories that all come together artfully at the end. Surprisingly I enjoyed the ensemble nature of this book.

What if Greek mythology wasn’t just a story, but you understood all the motivations everyone had? Would you feel the same about everyone? You would not.

I love contemporary retellings of the myths / ancient gods. This is no exception, it’s an empathetic and perspective shifting story. Each chapter switches between a chorus of different characters and I felt I was learning something new about so many myths. Only wish there was deeper exploration of some of the stories / characters.

Extremely slow and disjointed.

I had expected this story would focus on Medusa a lot more than it did. Still a good story. It’s interesting to see the different perspectives.

Haynes feminist perspective to provide nuance and humanize Medusa was really appreciated

One of the newest trends in publishing seems to be myth-retellings and as with any trend you do have to sift through a lot of mediocre money-grabs to find the good stuff. This is one of the better offerings from the genre, avoiding the predictability that can come with a re-telling of a well known myth by providing a fresh take that manages to hit the well-known plot points from a new perspective and with a new emotional weight.
