 I was in the mood for a quick and light read so I picked up A Love Song for Ricki Wilde. It did the trick and was an enjoyable enough read but not one that will stick with me. In romance terms it’s on the slower burn side and there is definitely an element of if not exactly insta-love then definitely insta-obsession. One didn’t bother me; the other I was willing to roll with. My biggest irritation was the over-the-top awfulness of Ricki’s family. I generally prefer a little more subtleness when it comes to characterisation. I always love a New York setting, and the fact that this story also included an historic storyline set during the Harlem renaissance was an extra bonus. The cross-generational friendship/ found family between Ricki and Della was delightful. And the Leap Year magic gave this a fresh, fun feeling. I did miss the emotional intensity that I enjoyed in Seven Days in June though.

This book is so whimsical! It is somehow equal parts historical fiction, romance, and magical realism. The characters are so endearing and funny. There felt like some minor plot points that were rushed or resolved too quickly, but overall it was a nearly perfect book!

Eesh, Tia Williams can write romance! And with so many more elements that I loved: dramatic and classist family members that could’ve come out of an Austen novel, magical realism, pop culture references that aren’t cringey, and admirable women all over the place. I loved Ricki with all her passion and colourfulness (“Because she (a) found fashion calming and (b) was dramatic, Ricki had dressed carefully for this occasion”.); and Ezra being funny and attractive (“Ricki barely heard him, as she was mid-epiphany. Was Warm Weather Ezra the sexiest Ezra?”) and their entire art-drenched love story, in which their love itself is so wonderfully uncomplicated, despite the circumstances they’re facing together. Loved this!

I love how Tia Williams writes about female friendships. However, I don't usually enjoy magical realism and this book was no exception. I didn't understend the pull and attraction between female and male lead. I would have preferred this novel to be about female friendship without the romance. 
Weaving Harlem history into the story was expertly done and very enjoyable
