It's pretty slow; there is more romance in this book than in the first. But the whole 500 pages took place over 2 weeks, so parts definitely felt it was dragging.

Just like the first book I was sent on an emotional rollercoaster with Jem, Tessa, Will, Charolette, Henry, Jessamine, Sophie, just all of them. Between the love triangle with Will, Jem, and Tessa and then the added drama with the Lightwoods I seriously needed popcorn at times. Then we have Gideon and Gabriel trying to train Tessa and Sophie, even though Tessa is a downworlder and Sophie is a maid and they don't technically need the shadowhunter training, but I do like the blooming relationship between Gideon and Sophie.

Then to learn that Charolette is pregnant and Henry tries to put her on bed rest for her entire pregnancy is just such a great ending.

Not sure how I will wait for the next one now. Sad to see who Tessa ended up with in this book.

For people who read before bed, I recommend not finishing this book before you sleep because it will become impossible. It ends on such a good cliff hanger - which was also not a cliff hanger - that left me mind blown and questioning what will happen next.

To be completely honest,I dreaded reading this book. I didn't really like the first one and was wondering whether or not to read the next two, but I had already bought them so I forced myself to and I am soooo happy I did.

I love how you finally find out more about Will and explore his character even more. I think he actually the most brilliant character ever! I love his story, I love everything about his character. I'm not sure how I feel about him being with Tessa. I defiantly want him to be happy, but I don't think he needs that happiness with Tessa. I think I would love it if they were just best friends/book buddies.

ok, but the way this book has made me emotionally distraught. I am beginning to understand now why this prequel trilogy is the crowd favourite. I stand firm when I say Cass Clare’s best books are her character-driven ones. the first 3/4 of the book did just that and really contextualised character motivations and emotions, an immediate 5 stars. my only disappointment was discovering that Will’s curse was nothing but a hoax which felt akin to the ‘this was just a dream’ plot device: disenchanting and sooooo unsatisfying
