I've been wanting to get into a long running UF series and have this one and Kate Daniels on the list. This book was middle of the road for me but I still want to continue with the series so that's all I care about :)
Pretty fun. I liked the complex faerie world and the female knight/private investigator thing. I know it's part of a series, but there were times when I wish I'd gotten a bit more of the various stories that were hinted at.

I wanted to like this more than I did. I found myself skimming sections in the last third of the book because October Daye got on my nerves and she talked too much. I didn't need things explained three times. The status of a changeling, for example, can be explained once and then reiterated in actions. The use of thank you was done a bit better.
Firstly, I never understood what was so special about October Daye. She mostly seemed incompetent and arrogant.
Secondly, what is up with her and Devin? The first info dump about him made him seem horrible - a groomer of children. Yet, she is down to hang out and still loves him? While, ok, maybe that's how grooming works... it was weird. October maybe is just really unaware of herself.
Thirdly, the faeries seen nice. October talks about them as if they are the amoral but rule bound kind. Nevertheless, they mostly seem nice and help her 80% of the time.
I liked the general breadth of the book. The broad cast of characters and types of fae was good. Faerie are my favorite fantasy type for novels, though I prefer them more selfish rather than plain murderous.
The setting of San Francisco was a plus, though I was a bit confused by some settings in my neighborhood.

October Daye newly de-cursed is trying to leave her changeling and private detective life behind. A promise from an old friend drags her back into the fold and gets her searching for answers in the furthest reaches of San Francisco and Faerie.
I quite liked the world this created, pockets of magic in urban life. Some familiar fae (kitsune, naiads) cleverly interwoven! Toby is a flawed character and this plot is pretty straightforward. But the set up for a series is solid!

Rosemary and Rue was pretty bad, readable at best. At the centre of the book we have October, our heroine, who isn't exactly bright, nor is she capable. She is helpless, and spends most of the book being saved, carried around and protected by others.
Those others, of course, invariably turn out to love her, even if sometimes some of them pretend to hate her. She then does nothing but rely on them to solve all her issues, and repay their kindness with... umm, nothing at all, except by asking for more favours, which are then also granted, god help me.
She ignores all obvious clues and options, does stupid things to advance the plot, and generally just goes around making this story stupidity driven. Which I guess makes sense, otherwise there wouldn't have been a story to start with.
Obviously, there also has to be a love triangle, because that's very important.
Don't bother with reading this.

Very interesting take on the paranormal crime genre. I like that Toby is such a unique character with as much weakness as strength. A bit predictable, but definitely a good read.
