Reminds me of the Jim Butcher books, but more enjoyable because it doesn't have the undercurrent of bizarre objectification of all the women who show up on screen. It's very fun to read a novel about a sad and lonely detective who feels like they've burned all their bridges and spends the whole book getting almost killed by most people they meet and have the protagonist be a woman. The paranormal fairy stuff was very fun as well.
-Started reading this book with high expectations. Decided after the second chapter just to finish this as a challenge to myself.
-Heroine was fucking whiny, to the point that I actually did bang my head against the wall.
-The setting was fantastic. It had so much potential.
-Most of everything was told not shown. Too much internal dialogue. Too much complaining from the heroine, not enough action happening.
-There were two instances where a gun was pointed at her, and instead of finding a way to escape, she fucking closes her eyes and complains about how she's always getting jumped on.
-I think most of the time the author gets her heroine wounded just so everyone could fawn over her, and show us how awesome and loved and great Toby is.
-One of the conflicts (between heroine and the dude who rules over Shadow Hills) seems pretty weak and thin. It was like it was only there to create more drama
-Scratch that, most of the conflicts in the book feels like they were only there to create drama so that the heroine can whine.
-Toby tells us exactly what a character's personality is, but when she actually interacts with them, they are totally different. She explains Devin as someone with a temper, lashing out often with physical abuse, but when we meet him, none of this is shown. Don't even get me started on that ending.
-There was an instance where she tells us she didn't care much for a certain character and then in a few chapters she turns around and says that no one is going to miss her as much as she did?
-I think the reason why I feel so strongly against this book was because the heroine kept complaining about her life. Yet she didn't do anything to change it. There were people around her who cared about her and was ready to lend a helping hand, but what the fuck did she do? She ran away, then complained how everybody hates her. She blamed everything else, everyone was at fault but her. I cannot be sympathetic to a person like that.

A good start to a series that has been on my List for some time. I would have given 4 stars if the plot beats were more varied than “attacked, again.” I enjoyed meeting the different Courts and feel I could warm to this character.

How does Storygraph not know I've read this before? This is at least my fourth or fifth read of this book. It's definitely not my favorite of the series, and definitely not the one that got me hooked, but every time I read it I notice something else. I love the characters in this series and I hope that it continues for a long, long time.

An interesting urban fantasy detective story. A little jumbled and confused. There were a number of interesting characters and some even made it through the book alive. Anything set in San Francisco is a somewhat plus though. Not sure about the magic system and the rules. But readable and I'll probably try the next one.
