Grim story. It started pretty tediously, actually, feeling repetetive and pompous. As the story began to emerge as to why Thebes was cursed, and as Oedipus was drawn ever closer to the ugly truth through his investigations, I did become interested (even though I already knew the story outline).

I kept wondering what the final point was. As Sophoclese summarizes, it seems to be that it is foolish to envy those who appear to have great power, wealth, or worldly estate, because there is no telling what lies beneath that golden surface.

Reading this after having recently finished the Percy Jackson series, and also having a general familiarity with Greek Mythology, I can't help but come away feeling that the Greek Gods were brutal monster. All the negative aspects of Oedipus' life came because of a prophecy made to his father. I can't recall offhand (and I'm not in the mood to research it) if the prophecy was made because Laius had sown the seeds of his own destruction elsewhere. I don't know that it even needed to be that logical, however; those Greek gods could be pretty capricious.

On the lighter side, I couldn't help remembering the episode of Frasier that is a play on the Oedipus myth. Hilarious.

Though I didn't entirely enjoy reading this novel I believe it is a must read for everyone. It is interesting and a fairly quick read. I had to read this for an English class, but it was well worth taking time to read.

I will forever have issues with this entire series, especially given how many times I've read and discussed it, but it's still a fantastic example of situational tragedy.

i read this in swedish class, and it was... a ride and a experience.

I already knew the basic plot from the oedipus complex in psychology, but I did gasp indeed. A entertaining read about a man who somehow manages to lose everything? pretty fun...

Fucked up if tru :/

I read this with my teenage daughter as part of her freshmen literature class. (We homeschool) We both enjoyed this and the discussions we had as a result. A very good example of the ultimate tragedian play.
