In a journey to find who his parent were, what his birth was and "who he is" - King of thebes, Oedipus destroys everything he has and everyone near him. In line with the times it is written when incest, patricide and similar sins are considered pollution. This is a short read and the prose isn't hard to follow.

I just finished rereading this with my class and I had forgotten just what an awful person Oedipus is. I mean, I know he's supposed to be a Tragic Hero and that we're supposed to feel bad for the fact that he did these two awful things, but didn't know it, but it's just hard to feel sorry for someone who kills someone because he won't get out of his way. True, he didn't know it was his father, but he knew he was SOMEONE and did it anyway. And then throughout the play he continually threatens to torture people, he's just not a very likable guy, not matter what the Chorus says. AND in the end when he blinds and exiles himself I know we're supposed to think he's so noble and keeping his word and he feels so bad, but I feel like he's kind of just acting like a whiny baby. Yeah...not a fan of Oedipus the character, though do like the play, especially Sophocles' endless metaphors for Jocasta's vagina. Those never get old.

For any lover of Shakespeare, this book is a must. It has plot twists, and a gruesome, yet hilarious, ending.

I seriously loved this book, and it's so short. It is in play form, but it's totally amazing.

Considering I had to read this for school, it actually wasn't that bad.
