I had to read this for class and am glad to have read it. That being said, knowing the storyline is more than enough when it comes to this classic since there is very little plot and or character development.
Sophocles clearly meant to raise more questions than to answer them, and that must be acknowledged when reading this text. There is no definitive answer of whether Oedipus is to blame in this situation, nor of what he could ever do to rectify it.
Instead of assigning a moral code, Sophocles toys with the magnitude of drama an audience needs to be satisfied. The slow burn of Oedipus implies that the emotions of the characters, the environment of the stage, and the grandeur of the chorus are all pivotal to making this play successful. Therefore it is essential to read this play while envisioning a grand production being performed.
Once you have read this play keeping the dramatics in mind you will understand what a gripping form of entertainment this was in it’s own time.

Oedipus is such an idiot
Primeiro contato que tive com a tragédia grega, achei fantástico, os discursos de Édipo foram 10/10, e toda as menções ao destino final de édipo são muito interessantes

One of those Greek plays that really didn't age well. If the Greek gods say so, you're screwed. A theme for the ages. Literally only lasted as long as it did because of the shock value.
3.5 stars.
I'm trying to catch up on some of the classics I've managed to miss out on and I figured some Sophocles was as good a place as any to start. Oedipus Rex was genuinely an entertaining read with enough twists and turns to fill its short length. It was interesting to see the foreshadowing and the elements of self-fulfilling prophecy. I can understand why this play would still be viewed so positively today. Not a favourite or anything, but well worth my time. I'll be reading Antigone next.

Second book of my Greek Classics Binge. (That’s what I decided to call this impulse to read anything Greek and old I can get my hands on.)
