Very preachy and unpleasant writing, a lot of mean spirited railing against straw libfems the author imagines on Instagram. The #MeToo plotline is poorly integrated and resolves in a stupid, nothing way.

my favorite things: the scene at the beginning between anna and her mother where anna is unnecessarily cruel (oh heartache), the relationship between leah and anna, and the chapters in the latter half of part two.

while i found the commentary on social media to be true, it lacked a lot of subtleties. we were perched right on the nose. also, the part three because incessantly preachy to the point where it feels like the author is turning to the reader to say “hi, this is my thesis statement." the writing was interesting, but a lot of the l.a storylines were suoer engaging. that is a similar problem with the flash forwards to the aesthetica(tm).

overall, it was good! nothing that i would rave about. ofc the mother/daughter storyline was my favorite; i’m nothing but predictable.

Whew, this one was super dark. It follows a young woman’s journey into the dark world social media influencing, where she is exploited by her manager. Without spoiling too much, this is a dark observation of the beauty/plastic surgery industry and what women give up to fit the online beauty standard, which is all fake in the first place. The ED stuff was a little upsetting for me so just be warned.

This was a really hard read. I think it's important to think about the impacts of social media and the influencer lifestyle, but it was hard to watch her devolve.

Mom death
. This is a huge theme of the book that is not hinted at at all in the description so please proceed with caution as it could be quite triggering. I was not expecting to encounter this at all but I would say it encompasses the bulk of the story.

This was an interesting book with an interesting idea. I would say the experience of the narrator is very specific and I don't agree with her a lot of the time. That doesn't make her wrong but her voice is often sort of grandiose as she discusses ideas of universal morals so it does feel a but like being fed a worldview.

Overall this book feels like less of a narrative and more like a reflection on loss, trauma, and image in the midst of an attempt to realign oneself through even more trauma (and some light stalking).
