Read it for english to do a "personal response" (I chose the book), I chose the book bc it was short and it was historical fiction.. wow. Honestly it was pretty rubbish. The main character was an absolute idiot and I spent the whole book hating him lol 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️ wouldn't recommend.

In some respects an atypical ´coming of age’ narrative - with a dark thread running through the book.

I'm glad I tried another book by this author. I read "A whole life" twice and I really didn't get the hype.
The narrative style is very similar, but this book had way more gravitas for me because it painted a picture of a life in Austria in the time just before WW2. It felt like this book (unlike "a whole life", in my opinion) knew what it wanted to show us as readers.
I enjoyed that it was just an ordinary person experiencing life (and other personalities), and not the super political hero with nowaday's point of view.

And btw, as a German, I am glad that this is a story by an Austrian author telling a story of this time in Vienna, also showing how a lot of Austrian people welcomed the Nazis or didn't really care too much about what they did, as long as they were not the ones worse off. It's time to show more for that part of their history, too.
