Not nearly as grounded and beautiful as other poetry I've read from Bukowski.

Dedicated to Jane, a dead love, the beginning of this poetry collection is a lot more emotional than others bukowski released.
The first half has a lot of good poems, but the second half is more ... meh.
My favs:
poems for personnel managers, The sharks, ice for the eagles.

Bukowski has always appealed to me from a writer's standpoint, as his style is one that I really admire. Additionally I think he pulls off a lot of poems that otherwise couldn't be considered successful just because of the way he writes. He almost has this air of confidence about him that seeps through the poems themselves. I've heard Bukowski was kind of an ass though so I guess that's part of it.
I'M RAMBLING, what I'm trying to say is that I really enjoyed this collection. I think Bukowski really succeeds at what he's trying to do here.

Its very hard to give poetry star ratings. There are some poems in here that I would give 5 stars and many that I wouldn't give even one star: there is a lot of shit to sift through in order to find the good. But the good is beautiful. A depressed, alcoholic writer, Bukowski's poetry is bleak but there are poems of even just stanzas that are so so beautiful.

All Charles Bukowski poem books make a for a good read. This isn't my favourite, it's true, but it's still packed with some beautiful, grimy, profound and astonishing poems.
