So many triggers! Ugh!

Kind of ironic that the title is The Independent Wife, but she is the weakest character I have ever read.
SpoilerShe admitted to not knowing her own husband, and nowhere in the book did she even get the chance to. But that didn't stop her from wrapping herself around his cock and calling it Love. This author knows nothing about what love truly is. She created this big crazy, stalkerific asshole image of the husband, then at the last minute tried to make it seem like he was such a great guy who loved her all along.
*rolls eyes* Gimmie a break!

3.5

I read this book 30 years ago and out of all the romance books I've read, I ONLY remembered this one by the name and the male lead, Rhydon. Finally it was on Amazon for sale, so I eagerly bought it and consumed it within 24 hours.

I read it, disgusted the whole time, with my lip curling. Once I yelled loudly "I hate him!" This is NOT romance, love, or even lust. This is abuse. Many times Rhydon hurts Sallie by grabbing her wrists, and "crushing" her with kisses. What made me the most angry was how manipulative he was, how mocking, sneering and uncaring he was towards her. Yet she always puts up with it and surrenders to him so fast, it's maddening.

He takes away everything she loves, grounds her from traveling and doing her job, basically pinning her in, and she knows it! She just succumbs to it. No career anymore? No excitement? No problem!

Not only that, but several times he tells her to "shut up!" and calls her a fool. Several times she knows she's in danger because of his temper, the look in his eyes, and he threatens her many times, even threatening her that he knows a lot of people and she'll never work in this town again! Does that sound like love or romance to you? She barely makes a whimper when he takes everything away from her!

I shudder to think what kind of young girl I was 30 years ago that thought this was an excellent book. Thank God my views have changed drastically since then.

Lastly, we are supposed to believe at the end that he changes and will treat her kindly. After all the emotional and physical abuse and threats he heaps on her??

I just saw into their future, and I can see good ol' Rhy sitting in his armchair, yelling insults and threats to Sallie because dinner is late or she did something "wrong" again. I got a good look at their house full of kids he wanted to have too, and they're all in therapy from having a mean, abusive father and an abused mother. It ain't lookin' good in the Baines' household!

To be frank, I hate Linda Howard sometimes for writing vulnerable and stupid heroines and Sallie might be the stupidest one she has ever written.

Sallie, who's husband leaves her for being vulnerable and dependant after her miscarriage ( talk about being there for his wife in her hard times 'eyeroll'). Rhys her husband thinks she is a big hurdle in his life and career and leaves her penniless, basically forgets he even had a wife.

Few years later, Sallie has become independent and has a good paying job. What Rhys does? He methodically destroys everything and keeps her at comfort of his house, pregnant and dependant 'deep eyeroll'.
How's that something good.
Rhys basically a hypocrite, Male chauvinist pig. What he did not want as a wife first, he does the same thing again making Sallie miserable and dependable.

Are you kidding me? What is even worse is Sallie lets him. What the hell is wrong with Sallie? I wanted to shake her vigorously, wake her up from the day dreaming. Your life was perfect, you didn't need that control freak, asshole as your husband but yet you let him win your over and basically keep you prisoner of his will?

Hated it. Don't even touch this one.

Fiiiiiiiine. I’ll admit it.

All those scathing reviews?

The H is a Raging Twat-Waffle. His insufferable self is almost surpassed in eyerolliness (yes, this is now a word) by the h drowning in self-righteous early 80’s raging women’s lib.

I’m sure these two are loads of fun at parties.

You know I love me a controlling j/p asshole, but this guy was not even remotely likable. I think you’d be hard-pressed to find me a bigger douche-canoe.

⚠️SAFETY SQUAD SPOILERS⚠️

- 8 year separation (abandonment)

- he was celibate.

My least favorite of what I've read by the author so far.

This is the story of an estranged married couple who surprisingly meet again and, while the previously devoted wife isn't interested in reconciling, the previously aloof husband who walked away, is determined to make their marriage work this time around.

I can't quite put my finger on what exactly it is, but something was missing from the story. The hero is a possessive neanderthal who manhandles her quite often, but, while I can usually forgive such behavior as an alpha male quirk, here it was a bit overdone.

The heroine on the other hand lies to herself a lot, telling herself that she doesn't care one bit about him and that she's moved on etc etc, but the moment he comes close or kisses her, she's a puddle at his feet.

Tropes I enjoy were there, but the execution didn't work on me this time and I didn't enjoy the story as much as I normally would have. Regardless, considering that this was one of the first books she published, I am looking forward to reading more of her books, knowing that they do improve later on.
