Everything about this story was excellent. Like what the actual hell??? This story was a thoughtful exploration of generational differences and family dynamics in context of what it’s like to be Asian in America in different time periods, the American dream/model minority myth, etc. It was also a story of self discovery and timing. No theme was too poorly discussed, everything melted together perfectly yet was still distinctly present I’m in aweeee. Also the ROMANCE WAS SO GOOD??? The way that you felt the love through mere scenes??? Excellence I can’t exclaim about it enough. Also the twists and developments just made the story so delectable I would eat this up any time???? There’s so much swimming through my mind and all of it sums up to me having to give this work of art 5 stars. This is such an important book to read, especially for Gen Z individuals trying to understand the world around them and before them.

Goo’s latest combines intergenerational family dynamics, time travel, and romance in a lighthearted story of a Korean-American teen’s fraught relationship with her mom. Sam’s unexpected journey back to 1995 helps her appreciate the level of micro (and macro) aggressions that her mother dealt with in high school. Never didactic, full of humor and heart.

My maiden Maurene Goo experience! While I loved the concept of the fraught relationship between Priscilla and Sam, the execution was somewhat lacking. I might just be projecting too much but I was never fully rooting for Sam, which is like, the core conceit! Her Gen Z self assuredness that 2025 is morally & socially better in every way was just sooo grating after a while (although if she was from 2015 I would have probably loved all the references so. who knows). The happily ever after ending was sweet, as was Sam's realization that she herself, not her mom & grandmother, had changed through her interventions. The exploration of the conflicted history between Priscilla and her own mom (shattering Sam's perspective that she's the Perfect Grandmother in contrast with the Wicked Mother) was also tasty. I'll definitely be recommending to my patrons, if only to get their opinion on whether the slang usage is cloying or true!

Didn’t enjoy this that much. I just failed to really understand the situation and didn’t like the whole gets sent back in time to make her mom hoco queen so she’s not as hard on her. I just really wasn’t a huge fan, but the writing was decent and someone else may be a huge fan! Just not quite my vibe. 2.75 because I didn’t really enjoy it but that was more my fault than the book itself.
