This is a meh from me. I don’t like that the characters who committed reprehensible crimes aren’t punished. They just don’t get to be pope. No one turns them over to the authorities to be dealt with. Also, the man who is selected to be pope barely features in the story. We hear a bit about his background and he has maybe three scenes but we really don’t get to know him. You can infer what some of his policies might be but overall I don’t feel like we really get to know him as a character. I wish the story focused a little more on him. ALSO also, I don’t appreciate the Islamophobia present in this book. No one gives a flying fuck about the Catholic Church. No one’s going out of their way to attack it. The most anyone is doing is calling for some accountability considering the crimes committed and covered up by members of the church. The terrorism was really a bit much.

I was really excited about this book after seeing the trailer of the movie version. What a disappointment. I anticipated intrigue and drama. Instead, it was like watching CSPAN during the Kevin McCarthy votes for Speaker of the House. Even the big reveal at the end was anticlimactic. Now I’m probably going to pass on the movie too. Ugh! Wasted time!!
