Hmmm...How to put this in words?
I don't like vamp fiction. Not since Twilight came about.
But I'm willing to give books a try, specially ones that seem so extraordinarily fantastic. So at the behest of my friend, I picked up the first VA novel, after looking at it written on my list of books to read for several years.
I was surprised that's for sure. The action played a large part, for which I was glad. IF I had to read another book about a vamp obsessed girl then I probably would have thrown the book out the window.
Rose is sarcastic and funny. Lissa is a little emotionally stressed, but with a very good reason. And the story line, dark and almost suspenseful.
What I liked best about the book/series was that it's story was more than romance, it had characters that were not weak i.e. Rose, and even Lissa, as well as others of course, BUT what pissed me off the most about the entire series was the way it was written. I really did not like the style of story telling. I've read writing that sucks the reader in and wraps the protagonists world around them, not Twilight of course. But for this series it wasn't the writing that sucked the reader in but the plot.
It certainly is a page turner, but some of the plot arcs were aggravatingly annoying. Even so, It's still a series worth reading. Though the series does have the main characters dancing around some heavy issues like violence, depression, and so on, it is still a good read if you want a leisure read because nothing really affects the reader. Not in my opinion.
This is both a good and bad review on VA. I liked it and I didn't like it. SO feel free to disagree with me. :)

Totally a guilty or no so guilty pleasure read. Are there way too many young adult books about hot vampires that fall in love? Absolutely. Am I going to read them anyway and book cheat on my husband by falling for the love interest? Yes all of the above. Vampire academy is about Rose a half vampire half human hybrid and her vampire friend Lissa (forgive me if I spelled that wrong, I listened to this book) that Rose is sworn to protect. The book starts with the explanation that they ran away from school and that Rose and Lissa are especially special in that there is a telepathic connection and Lissa is royalty.
Totally gives the “it all started when my mom met my dad and they fell in love and had me. Hi I’m ryan and my life is kinda crazy” vibe. I’ll start with the things I didn’t like. NO TO HAVING FEELINGS FOR A MINOR. This is just something that is never cool. Dmitri is 24 and Rose is 17. Already a non start, but if we follow the half your age plus 7 rule, they can’t be together for another 4 years. At 24 there was no way I would be with someone that immature and in a different phase in life and at 17, maybe? maturity is sexy. But that’s on the older adult to take themselves out of those situations. So yeah strong feelings on this one.
There were way too many things to explain about this fantasy world, like terms and they were explained in a way that was like “of course everyone knows this” I don’t know it bugged me. I needed to know this stuff, but I feel like authors come up with creative ways to bring it up. This book was pretty blunt about it. It was like a vocab lesson.
It was full of cringe. Like why is everyone so embarrassed all the time? Actually this one checks out, when I was that age I was embarrassed to exist, so moving on.
But back to the cringe, the accomplice at the end didn’t really make sense? Like I would do a lot for family, but like no? I would draw a line and tell someone?
But I did give it 3 stars. As much cringe as there was I couldn’t help but be totally enthralled and engaged the whole time. Also fell in love with Dmitri, can’t help myself. Definitely what you read young adult novels for. Also it’s going to be a tv show, so super excited for that.

The beginning book in this series is not as good as Twilight (the only other vampire series I've read), but it was still really good. So good, that I couldn't put it down. The author leaves out a lot of information at the beginning, and while you learn it throughout the story, it would have been nice to have a prologue of some sort just to fill you in on a little bit.
