I actually really enjoyed this book, though I was expecting it to drag. Marie Kondo manages to convince you that you can tidy a home or a space without needing to be a "tidy person", and she writes about the process as if it is a spiritual, healing experience. Her method seems like it would work, and I for sure would like to try it out sometime. Aside fromt the great advice she writes, reading the book is a relaxing and pleasant experience too.
My only qualm with the book is that it is clear that she is writing it from the point of view of a pretty misogynistic culture, and she is obsessed with the notion of women being "feminine" and being the ones to do the tidying, and so on. That being said, however, it's not too central a theme to the point of the book and so it's easy to brush aside and accept as simply a part of Japanese culture.

Inspiring and clearly written — the perfect combination for a tidying guidebook. Marie Kondo is such a sweetie, and it comes through so wonderfully in this little volume. (I did find the content quite repetitive, but that's mainly because I'm not used to this kind of content, as well as read it in the course of two sittings.) Looking forward to tidying my space — even if I don't quite follow the KonMari method…

Okay i like the idea of this book. Only have the things around you that make you happy. And i like the KonMari method and i am definitely gonna do it, exept for the throwing everything away part. In the book she describes that some of her client trow away over 200 garbage bags worth of stuff and i hate the throw away mentality. I think i am gonna donate the stuff i think other people can use. Also she always talks about wifes and i got the impression that she thinks only woman can benefit from her methods.

The idea is simple and without doubt effective. But the strategies presented are very absolute and don‘t acquire for any personal circumstances she might not have experienced herself, like financial problems or living with physical or mental disabilities. The ideas presented are nice and surely effective. But the strategies are not thought through and barely explained and if so, just by personal opinion / experience. E.g. there is a very clear system for everything, except for papers, there she states you can be lazy and the mere reason presented for this is that she personally doesn‘t like to do papers. It is a nice and inspiring read, but barely is there any objective reasoning or foundation past her personal opinions and as she presents her strategies as the one and only way, you are left feeling guilty if you need accomodations or changes for something. I‘d say you‘re better of watching the show, to be honest.

I didn't agree with everything, but I think the general principles are worth considering. Wouldn't advise to take it as far as she does, especially when it comes to creating gigantic amounts of waste, which is neither environmentally friendly nor class conscious. Also can't condone the weird sexist comments which, while minor in the grand scheme of things and few and far between, really play into negative gender stereotypes.
Ultimately, take her perspective with a grain of salt.
