I loved the focus on kindness to self. The audiobook felt like it was a good friend who loves me trying to support me. I will definitely try to implement the tips given by K.C. in my life.

I'm sure for some people this book is life-changing and so helpful. I don't think I'm in the right place for this. Maybe this would have been better after I had my son and had two young kids, but I just don't find any of the advice helpful. I just felt meh about the entire book.

this book changed my life and I am Not Kidding. honestly think everyone should read this book at least once in their lives. the kind tone and accessible formatting makes it an easy one to jump around in, dip in and out, and honestly is so calm to read that I found myself poking at it here and there when I was feeling bad.
if you have ever battled with care task upkeep (not just for your home but also for yourself) and the shame/self-deprecation that surrounds that struggle, this book is for you. I felt so unbelievably seen and the actual help part of the self-help felt real and customizable to anyone who reads it.
this book doesn’t tell you anything you /have/ to do or even /how/ to do something, but instead helps us break down the barriers holding us back from being kind to ourselves and offers various ways to help figure out what would work best for anyone as an individual.
if you exist, you deserve kindness and care, in all things. and if you find that hard, this might be a helpful resource to get there

Minor: Body shaming, Emotional abuse, Sexual violence
Some chapters cover things like eating, exercise, and body image, but all with kind words. KC also makes them easy to skip past if they are something you struggle with.
Minor sexual abuse, childhood abuse/emotional abuse mentions in relation to learned shame around cleaning and self-care.

I've never read a book like this - one that is actually targeted at someone who is struggling. Rather than the type of "get up and go, you create your happiness" pseudo-inspirational bull that makes up most of the self-help industry, it was so refreshing to read something that is focused on harm reduction and the realities of executive dysfunction. It is hard to realize how much negativity you have internalized about the moral value of housework and organization until you start to undo those messages and see things through a different lens. At first I was simply looking for creative ideas on how to re-organize tasks in a way that makes them more doable. But the more I engaged with the material in the book, the more I saw how changing your emotional relationship with care tasks is something that's even more important. It's one thing to know that it's okay to struggle, but many people, myself included, have a hard time applying a caring, kind attitude to themselves. Of course that cycle of shame and guilt is going to make it even harder to complete tasks. But kindness fosters a better environment for your overall ability, and changing the way you see things allows you to do things in a fashion that works best for you, regardless of how it may appear to others. Overall, an extremely important and helpful book.
