I know they have to keep up the pace in the pace in the plots but this one was pretty ungraceful and abrupt in how it was done.

I like that things are still pretty tense right up to the end here.

Spoiler
Pamela is being toured by Rick around the different settlements he manages. She's very impressed with them all. At one point, a zombie hoard appears. Mercer, Dwight, Siddiq, Princess and Rick head into battle to try to distract the hoard. Pamela, trying to get a better look, orders her carriage to move forward. The zombies, distracted by this, break off from their group and Princess is pulled from her horse. Mercer dismounts and helps her fight them off. Dwight sends out a signal and his army emerge and take down the rest of the zombies. Rick is furious that Dwight has had his army following them this entire time. Princess and Mercer are safe and kiss. Mercer is furious with Pamela for distracting the zombies and almost killing them all.

Michonne speaks with her daughter, Eloide, and says that she's accepted a position in the Commonwealth.

Maggie at the Hilltop, speaks with Aaron and Jesus about the new members from the Whisperer group. Maggie agrees to take them in. She also asks Aaron and Jesus to return to scavenging to get supplies as they try to rebuild the Hilltop.

As they continue, they end up at the farm. We see John speaking with a younger woman about the future of the settlements and the importance of sharing vs taking. John is very interested in speaking with Pamela, suspiciously so, although this remains unaddressed through the rest of the volume. Rick and Dwight speak about their past together, with Dwight apologizing for the way he's behaved. Rick and Mercer speak about the way the Commonwealth runs. Rick seems a little perplexed by it, but they soon arrive at the Hilltop.

Rick and Carl have a nice reunion. Maggie is very suspicious of Pamela, saying that she smiles too much, but, in the end, says that if Rick trusted her, she'll stand with Rick. Pamela offers Rick a ride in her carriage. At the Commonwealth, Michonne and Eloide ride to Greenville, a vacation spot near the Commonwealth. There are a few zombies, but their guard, Jerome, dismounts and dispatches them. However, more show up and Michonne scoops up a gun and takes them down. They continue. Once they get to Greenville they are greeted by the area's mayor, Cloris, who sets them up in a very nice cabin. As they are leaving, she gives them a sack of food for the journey, but Michonne overhears a family talking about their struggles to find food. She gives them the sack.

When they return, they come upon some guards attacking a man, Anthony Keith. Michonne steps in and stops it, but notes that Jerome is one of the guards. Later, Lance approaches her to defend the guards involved, saying Keith attacked the guards because one of them was having an affair with his wife. After she agrees, at dinner with Eloide, someones chides Eloide for saying something defensive towards the guards. Lance approaches and tells them that Keith has died. Pamela returns to the Commonwealth on fire and people rioting in the streets. Mercer charges into battle, with Rick close behind. Riots break out in the Commonwealth, with rioters breaking into Michonne's house and trying to take her and her daughter. Jerome rescues them, but rioters take Jerome. Michonne steps in and is beaten down. Jerome throws himself on top of her (it seems he went into a coma?) and Mercer comes in and ends the fight. Pamela speaks to the crowd, asking them to disperse. Michonne speaks in court, asking, for the good of the community, that the judge drop all charges. Rick asks her if she believes what she said and she says that she believes some of it.

Eugene and Stephanie find an old locomotive. Eugene is excited that now they might have an easier way to transport goods and people between all the settlements. The locomotive is in better shape than Eugene expected and he and Stephanie kiss. Later, after sleeping together, Eugene comes upon Stephanie reattaching her wig. Eugene is shocked that she's wearing a wig and Stephanie shows him her real hair. Eugene says she still looks beautiful and Stephanie says that she doesn't wear it for him and that she wants him to leave while she puts it back on.

Pamela is furious with Lance that he allowed things to get this far out of control. She spots Rick in the streets, helping to clean up and is horrified. However, Rick asks if she has something better to do and she admits she does not and begins to help as well. Her bratty son shows up and chides her for helping. She encourages him to help and he refuses, stalking off. Dwight and Laura note that, while they're cleaning, above them is a restaurant of wealthier people eating and watching them.

Princess and Mercer sleep together and decide that their relationship is to be more than casual. Walking back to his quarters, Rick speaks with a couple who ask if they can transfer to his settlements. Dwight is waiting in his room and argues that they should invade the Commonwealth and take it over by force. Rick believes they can do it politically and shoots Dwight down.

Carl leaves Lydia's room after they've just slept together and runs into Sophie in the hallway. Sophie's jealous, because she hasn't slept with anyone yet and none of the young men there are good enough for her. The implication is that she wants to sleep with Carl, but he heads off to his room. Later, Carl sends over the new kid from the Whisperer crew, Josh, to speak with Sophie, who rolls her eyes at him. Yumiko and Magna talk at one of the settlements about their fear of an upcoming war with the Commonwealth.

Michonne, Eloide, and Rick have dinner together. Michonne makes an offhand, callous comment about surviving everything to end up a waitress, much to Eloide's horror. Rick talks about how all of the time before the uprising seems like a dream and is suddenly overwhelmed thinking about Andrea. Dwight picks of fight with and is arrested by some of the guards. People in the street begin to object and Dwight is lead off, smiling.

In jail, Rick shouts at Dwight, saying that he's trying to fix things, but it cannot be done with violence and he's trying to do it with diplomacy. Mercer overhears this and says that Rick is the leader the Commonwealth needs. Dwight is released from jail and is picked up by Laura, who chides him for not cluing her in on the plan. She asks where Rick is in all of this and Dwight says that Rick will come around.

Eloide has brunch with her friends, who comment on how Eloide has suddenly risen in the ranks, leaving them behind. They say that they are unsure about what side Eloide is on anymore.

Rick is currently talking with Michonne and points out that the place is very flawed. Michonne doesn't disagree, but points out that they need Rick to take over using his brain, not his gun. Pamela takes everyone out zombie hunting, shooting one zombie and leaving Mercer to kill the rest. Rick, Dwight, and Michonne are horrified. Dwight and Rick confront Mercer, who points out that this all is for show. The two of them go to Michonne to see what they can do to change things, but it turns out Michonne also invited Pamela. Pamela overhears Dwight talking about overthrowing her and storms in, demanding that her guards take Dwight prisoner. Dwight pulls a gun and holds it to Pamela's head, calling upon Rick to start the uprising now. Instead, Rick kills Dwight. As Laura cries over Dwight's body, Rick, furious with Michonne for secretly inviting Pamela, yells that all of this is her fault. Michonne points out that, by killing Dwight, Rick avoided Dwight starting a war, but Rick says that there might still be one anyway.

Guess the zombies have been mostly annihilated, eh? Because their appearances were very few in this volume. So, if you come for the zombies, it may be time to set aside this series.

But, if you come to see what Rick will do next, then you are in for some development. The politics are overtaking the gore in this series. I’m not sure how much longer I can hang-on. I’m tired of spending most of the volume thinking “Why am I still reading this series?” and, only at the end, going “Oh. That’s why.”

It is going to end, right???

Me gusta mucho todo lo que implica la trama de la Commonwealth. Hay dilemas que te hacen pensar de verdad y dudas de las soluciones que están adoptando los personajes. La escala de grises en cuestiones morales es más intensa que nunca.

This is the penultimate volume, so you’d think by now I wouldn’t be phased by a main character dying…but let me tell you that my jaw dropped on that page. It seems our friends are losing their minds over the Commonwealth. I’m curious to see what happens in the final installment. I know one spoiler (a death), but beyond that I’m not really sure how this all will end.

The governor of the Commonwealth has reached Alexandria and is given a tour by Rick of Alexandria, the Sanctuary, the Kingdom and Hilltop. Rick goes back to the Commonwealth to look around but all is not as rosy as it was painted to be…

This was good. Interesting. I don’t know if there was enough for it to be the second to last volume of the entire thing but oh well.

It was a good book, although some passages were lengthy. I'm a little bit nostalgic to know the next one is the last. I can't wait to read the big finale.

C'était un bon livre quoi que certains passages avaient des longueurs. Je suis un petit peu nostalgique de savoir qu'il s'agit de l'avant dernier. J'ai hâte de lire la grande finale.
