blah. What a downer end to a great series. I have less than 20 minutes to go on the audiobook and I am close to giving up. And I have LOVED the rest of the series.
Just end on Book #4 and pretend this one doesn't exist.
WHY DID I FINISH IT?!?!? Bean was my favorite character and of course he died! :(

Works as a decent tie-up for the Shadow series after having beaten the reader to death with the "REPRODUCTION IS THE MEANING OF LIFE" stick, giving some character to these babies we've heard so much about, while posing an ethical quandary that acts as a step stool for those posed in the Speaker for the Dead series. It was nice to see the return of a "genius children in space" environment and something else familiar to fans of the first book that started this enormous web of books. I wasn't as connected to the characters and even Bean whom we've been following for so long was nearly unrecognizable! Still, there was a good dynamic and while there was a pretty silly solution to their whole "we will die before we're 20" dilemma, it was a fun short read, so I'll be less critical of it.

I'm a huge fan of all the Ender's books. So I read this book expecting a fitting end for Bean and new exciting characters in his kids. None of this appeared. I dislike the end of Bean and I find the kids flat and emotionless. No empathy at any time with them, when with Bean in other books we always managed to be able to feel what he felt. A hundred pages later, they are still strangers to me.
I loved the Bean Series, but I don't find in “Shadows of flight” any of the features that I liked there. Neither the characters nor the plot. I didn't enjoy reading it, even I hesitated whether to continue or stop reading. Finally I decided to finish the book, but only because it's quite short and I wanted to provide a worthy end to Bean (I've always loved Bean). Unfortunately, I'm disappointed with it.
In my opinion this is a book half baked, Card should have developed more its story. Despite being a short story, we are used to more complex characters and plots, and here they seem too loose. I see “Shadows of flight” as the worst book in Ender's saga.

As a fan of both series, it's nice to have some conclusions. I know a 6th and final "Bean" novel is on the way but I'm assuming it's going to be an Ender/Bean crossover that will finally finish off the two stories.
While the book is short on action, it's chock full of thoughts and dialog important to the series and loose ends have been tied or are close to being tied off. It's clear that Card is back on top of his game after a few lackluster non-Ender based books.

This was an amazing and was the right length. The things that happen aren't mind blowing or universe changing but it does change the tone of the rest of the books to come. There's a lot of emotional changes going on and it kept me interested the whole way through. Each child is growing up and facing huge obstacles that only geniuses with a genius father can get through. But I think they come out better in the end. I hope.
It is nice to see what happened to Bean and his kids. I suspect this leads into another story. Potentially this could lead to an amazing storyline with the original Ender series.

Another strong entry in the Ender series. I love that we're getting to see so many pieces of the puzzle, and none of the books that have come out have felt like a money-grab. Card still has new stories to tell, and new things to say, within this framework. He does a lot with really only only four characters in this short novel. I eagerly anticipate the sequel, which should tie the end of the Shadow series back in to the end of the Ender quartet.
