I thought this was super interesting and enjoy it. It felt more like a slice of life of a rukha rather that with a large plot but that works for a short story.

"I've already given you everything of myself. I've left my home, I've braved death, I've devoted myself to your care and training. I hunt with you and for you, I deliver all the bloodshed you crave, I worship you with my weak human frailty. In return, you must stay."
I was so excited to read this eversince I fell in love with Fonda Lee's writing in Greenbone Saga and I have mixed feelings regarding this.
I may have loved this more if it was made into a longer novel or series. We don't get much of the world-building and I felt like it was a lot more of telling rather than showing.
However, I did like how this book ended with the death of Ester's obsession of being a ruhker and it simply goes to show that there is still a life outside of that obsession. A lot of the other characters were one-dimensional and overall, the novella just felt very dry and dull. Would've preferred that the world has been expounded on and the characters more fleshed out.
