This is one of the most beautiful books I’ve ever read. I feel like I know the characters, and even though I didn’t particularly like Rebecca, I feel like I miss all of the characters now that I’m done reading because I had such a sense of being there. Leilani’s writing is just beyond incredible. She uses many words to explain things that could be summed up in just a few, which imo goes against the trend in literary writing right now, but because of it I know and love and understand her setting and cast more. There were so many passages that I have highlighted because how how much they inspire me to write. Such a beautiful and meaningful novel.

This was the first book I wanted to annotate in a long time. The prose was so beautiful, I wanted to savor every second of it. This book explores themes of life and death, creation (in both art and life), intimacy and love of all kinds, and an artist's view of the world. I really fell in love with the characters and although the story was more of a thoughtful reverie as the narrator moved through a period of a few months in which she moved in with the family of the man she was seeing. I ended up loving her relationship with the wife most - that strange jealousy and deep understanding, the push and pull of a person who creates and a person who deconstructs. Anyway, I highly recommend it!

I’m still not sure how I feel about this book. So raw and unfiltered and at times uncomfortable and yet I couldn’t put it down.

A rich deep and honest look into a life I will never understand being so far removed in my own personal circumstance and yet I was still able to relate with many of Edie’s thoughts and emotions. There were times I felt pity and care for her and times I felt jealous, her artistic ability, her confidence, her ability to understand and acknowledge her emotions.

I wouldn’t recommend this book to everyone but I wish that many people discover it them selves

Knocking this down a bit in the rating because it doesn't really have an ending. I liked the language at first, blunt like a rock used to bash in someone's skull, but it grows same-y by the end. I admit that's in part to convey the main character's mental state, but it ultimately flattened everything too much for me. That said, I thought about this a lot while reading it and wouldn't be surprised if it has staying power. Would definitely read more of Leilani's work.

Writing was gorgeous. Grimy. Other reviews said “sexy” and it’s def M. But sexy doesn’t quite describe. Some really soft and heartbreaking moments. I felt satisfied with the choice of ending. Also check TWs if there’s stuff you look out for, felt like I was checking a lot of boxes.
