My eyes were riveted to the pages throughout the entire read. Does that give you clue as to how much I liked this book? It ought to, but just in case it did not, I loved this story. I feel a tad guilty that I liked this book far better than Stoker’s Dracula, as if I am not literary enough for Stoker, but whatever, I cannot deny the trance that Dracula in Love put over me. I cannot deny that it did indeed captivate and keep me throughout the whole story. It sucked me into the story, and the lives of the characters in a way that Stoker’s Dracula did not. So be it.

Yes, Dracula in Love is based off a Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Yes, that is true, and for me it worked. It worked really good. Even though this story worked for me, I do have a feeling for all you Dracula purists, this book will just not do. For me though, I do believe that the author did a fabulous job with staying true to the essence, and maintaining many aspects of Stoker’s Dracula while at that same time taking the freedom to change context from which the story derives, to change the relationships, and credibility.

Right from the beginning, the prologue to be precise, the author puts the story into context. She confronts Stoker’s Dracula by having Mina address his version; account of details. Mina makes it clear, that his version is not accurate and because of that she has written her memoir. Stoker is woven into the story in subtle ways to show how he obtained his inaccurate version of events. The building of this context gave Dracula in Love credibility…believability.

Technically DNF, I got part of the way through the last chapter before the epilogue and just couldn't do it.
Look, the concept was fascinating, but there was no build-up at all and it was just not a well-told story.
Full respect to those who enjoyed it, but it ain't me.

I've given this a good college try, but I'm giving up. The sexual assault on page 7 that had no emotional/psychological ramifications turned me off from the start. Then the soft porn on page 46 was my breaking point. I'm embarrassed to even give you a quote. Let's just say that she wakes up from an erotic dream feeling "full" in a place that had never been full before and she set out to explore that area herself.

I'll be fair and say that the tone of the book does match the tone of Dracula very well. I was originally interested in this because Mina had been such an angelically good and exalted woman in the original. I thought it would be fun to see her let her hair down a little. I got more than I bargained for, to say the least!

Refreshing to have a different view of Dracula.

The storyline was over all good, the assylum was what brought the book down for me.

IF it was not for the lovely scenery then I would have given up on this book a lot sooner. I found Mina to be meek and when she got really scared her voice would grate on my nerves. I only could put up with this and the lack of character interest until about 4 chapters into part 2. In this time there was hardly any interaction between Mina and Dracula. This book did not do anything for me to make me fall in love with Mina as a person.

It wasn't that bad but it wasn't that great either. The book moved really slowly at times and I found myself skimming some parts which is something I only do when I just want to get to the end! I did like the character of Mina, but most of the characters were really different than I had imagined when I first read Dracula. So, I was pretty lukewarm on just about everyone. I can say that I really thought the mood of the book was based much more on Coppola's movie than it was on Stoker's original book so I did feel like something was missing. The horror of the book was also missing. There was no fear, no haunting creepiness.

I was a bit underwhelmed by the Dracula character when he did show up. I absolutely love the character of Dracula and I found this version a little lacking. I also was not that fond of this version's Lucy, and it turned the whole Bloofer Lady thing on its head. I'm not sure I liked that. Also, the whole concept of the vampire in this was different. I wasn't entirely sure if the Celtic mythology references were really necessary and they felt like they came out of the blue. Oh, and the whole Mina meets her grandmother in the asylum thing but doesn't know it just didn't work for me. It felt fake and contrived.

I certainly didn't feel the love between Mina and Dracula. It seems to me if the woman keeps rejecting you over the centuries, maybe you guys aren't really soulmates. I'm just saying.
