This is solid, fast paced fantasy! i found the characters predictable but the plot wasn’t — at least to me!

usually i have trouble keeping up with characters in fantasy books i’m listening to, but this one was manageable! not sure if i’ll continue the series but i am very intrigued— i suspect i’ll wait to borrow the next books after i finish more in my tbr

Lots of hype but didn't do it to me. *fantastic* voice acting though. Book is not very good at describing the world and definitely reads like a fantasy debut novel. Basic quest structure. I still dont know what a lionaire is, does it fly, swim, is it big as a house (3 riders fit on it) yet fits in a room? No idea how the magic system works (not that all fantasies need to specify the rules Sanderson style, but they need enough that you know what is possible and what is not). I cant tell which characters pov I'm in until they mention other characters' names (they're all internally very similar).

I LOVED THIS BOOK!! WHATEVER TOMI ADEYEMI PUT IN THIS NEEDS TI BE IN EVERY BOOK EVER!!! I laughed, I cried, I girlishly giggled, I fell in love and I felt heartbreak.
INAN WHEN I CATCH YOU!!! There is a note in my book that says I felt like Tyra banks shouting we were rooting for you!! AMARI!!! You fucking unbelievable badass!!! I love her and I would read about her kicking ass and eating food all day everyday. Zélie is so strong but also relatable in that you can see her struggle and grieve and push through for her people. Tzain was such a good big brother even when he was being a dick, though in hindsight I’m on his side. The magic system and world building in this was so unique and well done, I’m not a writer, I have no words it’s just so fucking good. The cliffhanger!! I predict they all have magic now. The connection thing!!! I called that!!! It was so well plotted that it was still a great reveal. Zélie and Roën a thing?? Tzain and Amari better get a happy ending!!! Who will rule now? I know Inan isn’t dead (unfortunately, i do not see how Zélie can forgive him!!!).
immediately starting the next book. I saw that this is becoming a movie and I am so excited to see it!! I could picture so many scenes in my mind because the writing was so vivid and moving.

This is the first book I’ve DNFed in a while, at around 40%. I was at 10 days of reading and just really did not find myself wanting to pick it up to continue it. The story beats are very tropey, with the “magic vanished x years ago, now we must go on a journey to find the ancient artifacts to bring back magic” and it doesn’t help that literally everything is just TOLD to you and never shown. There were so many things that happened that I thought could have been shown to us, but instead it’s just said by one of the characters, who I feel no emotional connection to either. Maybe it gets better by the end but in the reviews I see a lot of people agreeing with my sentiments, so….
