I was disappointed in this book. The first person narration of a story that took place years ago led to a tone that didn't match the story being told. It didn't have an eerie or dreadful cast over the story and instead felt too academic and detached. The characters were all really shallow and the resolution of the conflict was entirely distinct from the protagonist and led to no revelation or resolution. This is interesting as a historical document and nothing more to me.

I enjoyed the fun and old excitement of the story.
Imagine reading this as cereal in the 1870’s and being frightened but excited to get to the next chapter.
The romantic speeches given by Carmilla to Laura are so dramatic it would have had readers blushing and their hearts fluttering.
I’ve enjoyed this more than I thought I would.

It became one of my favorite Vampire novels. I especially love how tidbits are sprinkled in, in the beginning giving clues as to what is happening/will happen later on. My second time through listening I picked up on some details I missed the first time and it made the story all the more better for me. The way it’s written like a letter too is one of the things that I fancy about this novel along with the writing style. The flowery language amongst the girls and the queerness in this book is one of my favorite things as well. Highly recommend if you love classical literature with queer undertones.

I really don't have much to say about this one. I read it because I was curious about it and to me it was more of a mystery than anything. I expected much more lesbianism than there was, everyone says its an LGBTQ classic book but it was hardly there—explained at the end by the fact some vampires go after their prey with a passion much like courtship. Like yes both girls were drawn to Mircalla/Carmilla but eh. It was definitely interesting but kind of bland.

Not what I expected and not as captivating as everyone said.
