I always hear great things about this author, and it's well-deserved. I have a deluxe edition that actually shows annotations at the back and the foreshadowing, and call-outs that are cleverly placed throughout the story are exceptional. It actually made me want to re-read this book so I could appreciate it even more.
To start, I will say this does feature a storyline that mentions pedophilia and sex trafficking. I only call this out for readers who aren't already familiar with the author's work, and that this may be a trigger for.
North Falls is a small town in Georgia where everyone knows everyone. Emmy Clifton's family has been there for decades upon decades. But everyone knowing everything can be a blessing and a curse, especially when some people become very good at hiding who they really are.
This story follows two timelines. However, this does not bounce back and forth; it's just one timeline and then the other. There are twists throughout the story, but they always made sense in the story and helped further it. There was not one point where I felt something didn't fit or make sense.
This story is exceptional, and the author handles heavy topics with honesty; it can feel brutal at times. However, it feels authentic and like the topic is approached with respect, but the reality of what can happen to victims. The characters go throw a range of emotions and situations, and even when the story is focused elsewhere, the author manages to continue to grow the characters and their storylines.
This is the first book in the North Falls series, and to say I am in desperate need of the next one would be an understatement.

So slow. Not interested in the characters. Police procedural but Emmy is just being taught things by her sheriff father.
