I won a Facebook competition held by And Other Stories to win one of their books of my choice. So, I chose this book of my own accord, and yet it took me until I got a few pages in for the realisation that I don't enjoy naive child narrators to come flooding back to me. So this book misses out on one star because I find child narrators incredibly irritating.

Longer review to come.

This is definitely a book you'll either love or you'll hate. An interesting, quick read.

This was a very quick read, but so well written. You see the world through this young boys eyes and you learn so much about him and his life it is amazing.
I highly recommend not reading the back as it takes a way your chance to figure out what is going on for yourself.

This book looks at drug lord life through the eyes of a seven-year-old son of a drug kingpin in Mexico. What starts out as potentially-charming narration by a precocious child quickly turns chilling & disturbing. I think the book is deceptively simple (since the narration mimics a 7yo, plus its short length) but the deeper observations & messages are heartbreaking. It hit hard for me. Maybe because I'm a parent? A simple, yet immensely hard, book.
