Just wasn't for me. I read one of her later books (immortal longings) and loved it, but this one took me months to get through. Would have loved it if I was still in late high school or early college.

This book was genuinely so enjoyable to read. Romeo and Juliet retelling set in the 1920s in Shanghai is probably the best thing I've heard in 2020. A couple things that came up as I read this: it's pretty slow (like really slow), there's a past with the main characters that is hinted at throughout most of the book and then is discussed (in a heartwrenchingly beautiful way, in my opinion) but their current situation falls a bit flat (though, I swear, I just want Roma to say beautiful words to me), Juliette's character is well fleshed out and Roma is less so, and that ending has me all kinds of confused. I can't wait for the sequel!
