Look, you aren't going to read this if you aren't interested in Mt. Desert Island history...and you shouldn't. It's a very basic, formulaic 19th century romance with some charming details about the Bar Harbor summer season of the 1880s. It contains an odd middle section where we diverge to the railroad strikes of the West, mostly to show how heroic our hero is but also partially to talk about those ungrateful, rabble-rousing strikers...something that I'm sure went over well with Hayes' intended audience during the Gilded Age. Otherwise, Austen this is not.
