Enjoyable story that brings back childhood memories. This short story is great, leaves us with so many questions and few details. I recommend it for a short story, but do not expect a long, complete book.
I read this abridged version in hopes that it would give me an overview of the story and pique my interest to read the original. It did not accomplish this task. I understand that the story is satire, painting a caricature of religious disputes, of the time period's conflicts between England and France, and of humankind in general; however, while I may agree with parts of Gulliver's view on humanity's tendency towards useless disputes, I certainly didn't enjoy the read. I suppose Swift actually did manage to accomplish his goal: "to inform, and not to amuse you."
An excellent, short parody/satire about the failings of humanity and the mortal condition. My absolute favorite quote from this story was stated by the giant king: "...Whoever could make two ears of corn, or two blades of grass, to grow upon a spot of ground where only one grew before, would deserve better of mankind, and do more essential service to his country, than the whole race of politicians put together."
I HATED this book. I would have stopped after only a chapter or two, but I was determined to finish it. It reminded me of being back in high school English class. Like being forced to read a boring, pointless book that you don't fully understand. It was so bad I even had to read it's sparknotes page after every chapter to make sure I understood it all. Would not recommend.
I have the 1957 Simon & Schuster Pocket Books edition. This book aged marvelously. It is not a children's book, nor is it about what you think it's about. A hoary old classic from 1726 that is actually a very delightful read.
