I loved this book. I hope Virgil Wounded Horse is destined to go down as one of the great American fictional detectives. This book was full of violence and pain, yes, but so much love and humor, too, and a wonderful meditation on learning to love yourself and where you come from, flaws and all. Is this really a debut novel?

Excellent for a debut but gorier than I'd like, this book shows promise. Could have used better editing as there were some awkward or repetitive passages. I appreciate the author's restraint in only describing ceremonies to the extent that other Lakota writers already had, to protect secret elements.

A lot of potential here but writing was very declarative, which is great in code but not so much in narrative fiction.

One of my favorite reads of 2021 so far. From the first page, this story gripped me and kept me turning pages. Weiden's beautiful prose, combined with a compelling cast of characters, unforgettable settings, and a solid mystery, bring together (in my mind) all the aspect of great fiction. Highly recommended.

Enjoyed this book and learning more about Native culture and experience while also enjoying a mystery/thriller. I hope this will be the first in a series.

I'm a sucker for a good thriller and enjoyed the fresh approach to "Winter Counts" set on a Native American Reservation. Heska Wanbli Weiden brought a new perspective to this genre and I felt he did an excellent job weaving in the rich cultural context of this novel. Overall, I never really connected to this book and felt the characters and storyline lacked a bit of depth. Interesting read though that has definitely opened my eyes to a new subgenre!

i joined an on-line book club and this was the book assigned. it drew me in immediately. the story was excellent and the characters endearing. in addition to the enthralling story, the author gives you a clear and depressing look into life on the reservation for our indigenous people. i highly recommend this book for both reasons; the story itself and the power of looking outside ourselves to gain empathy for human beings who are treated quite poorly by our federal government.

I liked it. Slow start but had a lot of history in it and ended with a bang!
