This is hands down the BEST book I have read in a long time! The topic of opiods and heroin hit home for me and where I’m from and this added a genius Native American cultural twist. READ THIS NOW!

I loved this book a lot more than I expected to. I thought the writing was absolutely beautiful. There was a grittiness to it that I really enjoyed, especially for a crime thriller.
I also really loved learning about Lakota culture. I did have to look up some words, but it didn't deter from the plot. I have so much more compassion for the Natives than I did before and am interested in reading some of the books mentioned by the author in his note at the end of the book.
I did kind of see the twist coming from the beginning, although not completely. I didn't have a fully formed idea of how it would happen, but I had a feeling about the bad guy from the beginning. The character development for the main characters, but even some of the secondary characters felt natural and not at all dishonest.
I hope that this author continues to write stories with Native characters. He has an amazing way of telling stories that at the same time educates non-Natives about current issues that need to be addressed.

Starts off strong and sort of lags in the second act but it truly takes off in the last 100 pages. I ended up really enjoying it. It’s a beautiful tribute to his people.

Probably just short of 5*. I like crime writing that looks beyond the immediate story to explore wider social issues, and this book did that very well. It was also a page turner and had some great characters. There is a little more violence than I would normally go for, but overall I enjoyed it and will be looking out for the next instalment.
