Originally read December 2019. Now it’s July 2020 and honestly? I’m bumping this from four to five stars. This book IS life-changing. I love folding clothes now. My closet is satisfying to look at. And I thought I was an organizaysh queen before...
All of the Virgo in my chart sings the praises of Marie Kondo.

This book talks about you personal style, guides you to aim for your perfect life, asks you you to make your own priority list. It helped me underatand my needs more. And if you often feel overwhelmed by the clutter you make and don't know how to control it, I would ask you to read this book too

I already had familiarity with a lot of the tips she shared. I disagree with the notion of "just throw it away". It could be a translation issue or a cultural thing, but I think if items can be donated, they should be to help reduce waste.

How have I not review this yet? This book IS life changing! I can't BELIEVE how much I got rid of--and kept rid of! This book has helped me move on from old stages of my life, forget embarrassment and heartache, and inspired me to finish projects. It helps me understand what I really liked and loved and who I wanted to be and how I wanted to live. I can't recommend this book enough.

There are no real content warnings for this book though I would advise everyone to keep in mind that any journey through life is not a one-size-fits-all - and that what works for some might not work for others. While this book is a great starting place into keeping your spaces neat and tidy, and developing some life skills along the way - I would also venture to say that for neurodivergent people, particularly those who are autistic, or have ADHD or OCD might struggle with Kondo's methods. And, you know - I think most self-help books are kind of the same way... meant as a guideline and tools rather than a strict regimen. I think that gets lost a little bit in Kondo's methods, because they are so strict and the same for everyone.
My favorite part, I think, is holding gratitude and respect for your belongings and treating them with kindness... thanking them for their use. I do believe personally that you get back what you put out into the Universe - and it's a little piece of mindfulness I could stand to adapt to my every day life.
The part that I disagree with is that minimalism always equates to happiness. Or that tidiness is a one-size-fits all. I super agree that you should only keep things around that spark joy but, for example, when Kondo mentions sorting through books and only keeping a few that you read over and over again...I disagree. If I don't like a book, I donate it. If I do, I keep it. Seeing my books in their full bulk DOES spark joy for me - and I think a healthy amount of clutter might spark joy for others too.
There are a lot of good techniques in this book to adapt - but also a fair amount of assumptions that everyone is the same or needs the same things and I do disagree with that part. So please read at your own risk, take from it what you can - but only as it adds to the happiness in your life. If it isn't sparking joy - you've kind of defeated the point. Keep the things around that make you happy.

I’m being kind in giving this 3 stars only because it has made me want to clean… a little. She really lost me talking about how socks have feelings and deserve to relax…
