alainral's review against another edition
Soft DNF. The worldbuilding is strong but the political intrigue was exhausting to read when I really wasn't in the mood for it, and pacing was a bit slow for my already strained attention span.
Graphic: Abandonment, Xenophobia, and Confinement
Moderate: Death, Murder, Violence, Colonisation, and Mass/school shootings

This book is technically a sci-fi, but I would not say that is the primary focus. This book is a political intrigue about falling in love with a culture that want to eat yours.
The main character is fresh-off-the-boat diplomat from a small mining station to the heart of the empire. She has to grapple with the failure of the secret station machinery that puts the memories of her dead predecessor in her head while simultaneously trying to solve his murder. She is in completely over her head and has to quickly find out who she can and can’t trust.
If you love linguistics, cultural differences, and illegal brain surgery; this might just be the book for you.
