Mina and the Undead Review on K-Books
Mina and the Undead is one of those books that I was really looking forward to this year. The author, Amy is a great friend of mine and I am so very excited that her debut novel is releasing. I’m probably not the audience that this book is aimed at, as I’m not really a huge horror fan, however, when I was offered the ARC, as Amy is a great friend I really wanted to give it a go. I did like Mina and the Undead. It’s a really unique and different take on a vampire book and I liked that.
Mina and the Undead is a Young Adult Thriller/Mystery/Horror. It’s perfect for any fans of Point Horror books. If you’re a huge Point Horror fan then I think this book would be perfect for you. As I am a complete and utter wimp when it comes to horror I just feel like this book wasn’t for me. I near on had a heart attack when there was a character dressed up as a clown (thanks Coulrophobia) so I was very reserved in reading this one because I knew that it was probably going to terrify me.
As I am not a Point Horror fan, I don’t know if this is a typical thing for this genre of book, but I personally felt a lot of the plot points happened too quickly and too close together. There were a few times when I was just confused thinking okay how did we get from there to here? How did that happen? I just felt like I would have liked a but more explanation and narration to pad the story out a little bit more in between these main events. Sometimes, there was so much going on I kind of felt a little like I had whiplash.
Mina and the Undead is a great, unique and intriguing storyline and I have no doubt that fans of YA Horror are going to eat this up and adore every single moment of it. For me it just needed a little bit more. I am glad I read it and I can’t wait to see everyone fawning all over this one and loving it, but unfortunately this genre just doesn’t seem to be for me.

Thank you to NetGalley for an arc in exchange for review.
There's nothing particularly wrong with this book but it didn't quite meet my expectations. It was sort of reading a corny 90's horror, nothing wrong with that at all but I expected something on top of that to give it more of an original edge.
The book was also very rushed - the characters weren't able to develop as much as I would like and that goes for the same as the relationships in the book too.
This is definitely more of a thriller than a horror - there isn't many horrific moments in this, it's very light horror.
It was a quick read and fun read.

I cannot say enough positive things about this novel.
It contains fabulous, fangtastic festivities.

If you are a fan of all things horror, I do believe this is the book for you.
Set in New Orleans, we meet Mina as she arrives in New Orleans to see her sister Libby. This should be a summer of fun but what starts out as blissful time away (many thanks to Libby's housemate Jared) all turns rather horrific as dead bodies seem to be turning up all over the place.
A killer appears to be on the lose, recreating well known murder scenes and unfortunately for Mina, her sister is a suspect.
Mina and the Undead is a fast-paced read.
Being set in the 90s, I felt a sense of nostalgia. It had Scream vibes about it and with all everything that was happening I couldn't for the life of me work out who the killer was. Unexpected would be what I thought when they were finally revealed.
For me what was refreshing was that although I'd say this is a YA book, it isn't your typical one for the genre. The horror element, along with the case of characters make this a really unique narrative.
Addictive reading.
Like other reviews I've read, I'm really hoping that there is a sequel in the pipe line.
I'll say it, I'm a SUCKER for Mina and the Undead.

This was a fun, vampy, gothic read that included many of my favorite bookish buzz words. New Orleans is one of my favorite cities, and I love reading books set there. This one is set in the mid-1990s in New Orleans, and along with vampires, it also includes some haunted tours and mansions complete with reenactments of famous horror movie scenes. The gory mystery of a serial killer recreating some of New Orleans most infamous murders kept the plot moving along quickly. I will admit that some of the dialogue felt awkward, and and the characters seemed to often suddenly need to go to sleep just at a moment when you’d expect an important conversation, but those things really didn’t bother me. I definitely had a good time with this YA paranormal mystery.
