God this was long and boring. I could not get into the flow and sadly after many days of putting off reading it I had to call it quits

- short-listed for the Whitbread Prize
- light, amusing upper-class comedy (in a P.G. Wodehouse sort of way) set in Dublin and its surroundings
- the protagonist, Charles Hythloday is accurately described as part Bertie Wooster and part Ignatius J. Reilly (from 'A Confederacy Of Dunces')

this was laugh out loud funny at times! I do enjoy books that are a good mixture of tragically sad and absurdly funny - this book reminded me a lot of Paul Torday's books.
