The simple, black and white cover of this book (my Arc copy only had the title and author on the front) hid a sexually charged, expertly written and thoroughly modern romance, that I found gave the office romance sub-genre a much needed reboot.
For me, these books (or the ones that I picked up at least) seemed to centre around the male character being the figure of authority in the story. They were usually cast as the CEO or director of a company and the female character usually ended up either working for them or for a competitor. Stewart disregards this trope and instead has two characters that are very much equal in the work place AND in the bedroom. This was what I found so refreshing about this book.
Here, we have Jennifer, a strong independent and confidant woman. She owns her personal and professional lives and she doesnât apologised for knowing what she wants both these aspects. Jennifer is a character I wanted to emulate for her sensitivity and her strong spirit. While other female characters may have crumbled or ran away when they found out that their one-night stand was their new business partner, Jennifer squares her shoulders and gets ready to not only fight for her company, but also vows to show Marcus that she is more than ready to fight for what she believes in. This battle of wills, mixed with a good dose of sexual tension makes fantastic reading and I could not help but compare this to two people dancing a Tango or Pasodoble. (Yes, I have watched a bit of Strictly Come Dancing and feel that a good romance needs to have the element of a well choreographed dance, which this book has in spades).
As for Marcus, he oozes alpha male yet when Jennifer challenges him in the boardroom, I could not help but chuckle watching this business mogul become a tongue tied adolescence. However, we come to see how much he genuinely cares for Jennifer by checking up on her well-being, by sending a car with food for her when she is working late or picking her up from the train station. It is these little things that just elevate him as a character that you canât help wishing there were more of in real life. All I can say is if there was a FTSE 100 listing of eligible, hot, single, fictional CEO, Marcus would easily oust a centre CEO with a colour for a surname as number one. (At least he would for me).
Mr One-Night Stand is a relatively short book (only 224 pages long) but Stewart pack so much heat, story and character development in it. This truly is a book that the term âless is moreâ applies to. Seriously, you may need to a long cool glass of water or an electric fan to cool your self down when reading this book because it is H-O-T.
VERDICT:
This is the first book I have read by this author and the first from Mills & Boonâs DARE imprint, but my first impressions are that this will not be me last. Stewart just showcases a talent that is so very rare and I found myself going straight back online to see what else was available by her. She is a fresh new voice in this genre and I do hope that she will continue to have great success. I for one will be adding her to my instant buy authors.
So, grab that bottle of wine, put your phone on silent and pick up this belter of a romance book. You will not regret it!
