When I saw the goodreads rating for this book was over 4 stars I was honestly shocked. Honestly, the .25 is because the full-cast audiobook was entertaining while I worked on a knitting project lol, I honesty would probably not have been able to get through it if I was reading it.
This book was kind of a mess, and just pretty inconsistent. The world building was not well established or explained, so it felt like things were just added to the world to suit the story at any random point, the FMC was actually dumb I’m so sorry (the plot twist was a surprise to her only), and her reaction to the “reveal” just felt irrational and like it didn’t make sense with the rest of her thought processes throughout the book. With that, I felt as if the “twist” was just too perfect, too ideal for her and Hawke and also improbable that that robust a level of trickery to an entire society would be possible. And she was somehow upset by it when it actually just made everything kind of perfect for her and fit what she had been thinking for her whole life?? Idk there’s a lot of things about her character (and her “romance”) that just don’t make sense and aren’t well developed.
The only thing consistent was the writing….the writing was so repetitive and used the same phrases and descriptors and dialogues over and over I could pretty much predict what everyone would say, think, do, or (most importantly) smell like 🙄 at any given point. It could have been interesting if things were more developed and the characters had most consistent development, but honestly this isn’t a great book. It is entertaining though, especially the audio, and I have a problem with needing to finish series so I will be reading the rest but just to consume content while I knit.

I really enjoyed this book. Some of the twists that were in the book you could kind of see coming but the world building was amazing and I couldn't even begin to say how much I loved the main characters

Such a good book but very confusing at the start. Detail is added as you read, but terms are referenced without being explained. Took ages to piece together different parts
